Central State Hospital: A Legacy of Care and Transformation

Central State Hospital in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, traces its roots to 1870 as the nation’s first psychiatric institution dedicated solely to African American patients.

Initially founded as the Central Lunatic Asylum for Colored Insane, its creation reflected the racial divisions of the Reconstruction era and the then-prevailing belief in segregated care.

Doctors like Francis Stribling advocated for separate facilities, which shaped the institution’s early years and mirrored broader societal norms.

By expanding and moving in 1885, the hospital addressed a rising patient population, but it also faced persistent problems like underfunding and overcrowding.

The 1964 Civil Rights Act prompted the desegregation of the hospital by 1967, initiating a vital shift toward racial integration.

Recent years have brought both celebration—such as its 150th anniversary and a new facility build—and scrutiny, especially after the tragic 2023 death of Irvo Otieno during the intake process, which drew national attention to ongoing mental health care challenges.
